For those on their Chota Char Dham Yatra, the Gangotri Temple is a place of pretty importance. The Gangotri Temple was originally built by a Nepalese general Amar Singh Thapa. Situated in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, the Gangotri Temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. It is believed that when Lord Shiva released the Ganga from his hair, it started flowing here. When near the Gangotri Temple, the pilgrims also visit the Bhagirath Shila and Pandava Gufa. In normal course of Chota Char Dham Yatra, the pilgrims visit the Gangotri Temple after the Yamunotri Temple. It takes around 4 hours from Uttarkashi to reach the Gangotri Temple. Opening Date for Gangotri Temple 2021

Every year, the gates of Gangotri Temple opens on the day of Akshaya Tritiya, i.e., in the month of April/ May. Final decision regarding the opening of the temple is made by the Pandits, mandir committee and other concerned authorities. Actual dates for opening of Gangotri temple in the year 2021 has not been announced yet. The tentative date can be found below:

Closing Date for Gangotri Temple 2021

Gates of the Gangotri Temple closes after the festival of Diwali. Since, it is not very safe to visit the temple in the winters, the temple is closed with the approaching winter. The closing date falls normally in the month of October or November. The deity of the temple is shifted to Mukhyamath temple in Mukhba after the Gangotri Temple is closed where it is worshipped the whole winter. Tentative date for closing of Gangotri Temple is given as follows and will be updated after the announcement of the actual date.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • It is suggested that the pilgrims plan a visit to the Gangotri temple before the weather starts getting colder.
  • Visiting Gangotri in the monsoon season should be avoided too. Visiting earlier when the temple opens is suggested (preferably in the month of June).
  • Many trekking routes start form Gangotri and therefore it is one of the most visited location by those who love trekking.
