Koteshwar temple is a consecrated town near Rudrparayag where renowned shrine of Lord Shiva is built along the Alakhnanada River. Koteshwar Mahadev Temple is located inside the cave where Alakhnanda flows just few meters away. As per old sayings it is believed that Lord Shiva meditated here while he was travelling to Kedarnath. As per mythology when demon Bhashmasur tried to Kill Lord Shiva with his power, Lord Shiva ran away from him and meditated at Koteshwar to seek Lord Vishnu’s help. When he was successful, Lord Vishnu appeared and gave him trick of killing the devil which eventually helped Lord Shiva and he could kill Bhasmasur.

Koteshwar temple is located at a distance of 3kms from Rudraprayag and is well connected via robust motorable roads. In order to reach to Koteshwar Mahadev Temple one can hire a taxi or can take up a sharing jeep. Buses are also available from Rudrprayag.
