Located at a height of 800 meters above the sea level, Gauchar is a small town that is entirely surrounded by mountains on its all sides. Gauchar is the biggest area of flat lands in Uttarakhand and has the potential to be an airstrip in future. This place also serves as the resting point to many pilgrims travelling to Badrinath temple.
Gauchar’s Historical Story
The large flat area of Guachar has played significant role in the history. The field of Gauchar was used as an airstrip and was the host to numerous bigwigs in the past. It was also the site for some of the largest trade fairs in the area. The flat land was the property of Panwar Kings of Garhwal region which was later donated by them to the management committee of Badrinath temple.
Primarily, Gauchar gained attention in the year 1920 when the Lady Wilingdon, wife of the then Viceroy of India landed. Later, in 1938, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and his sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit travelled here via air to offer their prayers to Badrinath temple. In 1943 the Gauchar was the hosting place for one of the largest fairs in Uttarakhand. The Gauchar Mela served as a huge market for the Bhotias to sell of their products that comprise precious jewels, woolens, heeng and remained great point to purchase some of the daily needs such as cloth and salt.
Fair at Gauchar
Gauchar Mela is a famous fair that is celebrated here every year with all pomp and show. It commences from 14th November and continues for a week at a stretch. It remains a cynosure not only for the local people but also for the traders and merchants that arrive here from every corner of the state. It is widely attended by the tourists and the residents of the state. Many cultural programs as in dance and songs are organized here to interest people visiting here.

Gauchar is situated in Karnaprayag Tehsil in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The flat land is located along the bank of Alakhnanada River enroute to Badrinath.

If you are travelling to Gauchar via road then it is ideally connected by motorable roads as in Haridwar, Delhi and Rishikesh. NH58 is also passes through the town. The nearest railway station is Rishikesh at a distance of 235kms and the nearest airport is Jolly Grant at Dehradun which is 400kms away from Ghaziabad, India.
