Gangotri Dham

Gangotri, its name itself defines its beauty and importance as the most acknowledged holy place of India. It is recognized as the origin of holy river ‘the Ganga’ and comes amongst Char Dham of India where you can remove the entire offence from your life and start a new life based on the truth and honesty (It is assumed). The place is situated on the banks of Bhagirathi River and at an altitude of 3100 meters above sea level. Thousands of pilgrims come this place every year for the worship of goddess Ganga and get the blessings. In ancient time, the river Ganga was introduced by River Bhagirathi but later on it combines with River Alaknanda and the name is converted into The Ganga. You can find a majority of temples, ashrams and small shrines @Gangotri. The Gangotri temple is not opened in every month of a year; it opens on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya in the month of May and closed on the occasion of Bhai Duj or Yama Dwitiya in the month of November. The rest of the six months it is closed.

History of Gangotri
Gangotri is the place where the Ganga (the stream of life) touch the earth for the first time and this is the reason behind incredible popularity of this place. As per the mythology, Goddess Ganga was the daughter of heaven who manifested herself in the form of rive for helping the King Bhagirath to come out from his predecessors sin. It was the reward to King Bhagirath given by Lord Shiva for his penance.
