Introduction on Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences
Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), is a leading and autonomous
institute of India, dedicated to research and development in Astronomy & Astrophysics and
Atmospheric Sciences, established in 1954. Department of Science and Technology, GOI gives
financial support to ARIES.
A Brief History of Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES)
In 1947-55 Government of India was initiated a movement on scientific activities. Dr.
Sampurnanand was a cabinet Minister of Education and later the Chief Minister of the state. He
was initiator and interested in encourage development of the science of Astronomy. In the
time of Progress of Science and technology, Uttar Pradesh State Observatory (UPSO) came into
existence. In 1955, UPSO was transferred from Varanasi (UP) to Manora Peak, Nainital and
selected as the most suitable site. Manora Peak, south west of Nainital is 9 kms off from
Nainital town. Now UPSO is known as Aryabhatta Research Institute of observational sciences
(ARIES).
ARIES came under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Govt. of India.
From Independence, ARIES has been worked on many ongoing projects and achieved
remarkable progress. Institute has given a significant role in study of galaxies, Active Galactic
Nuclei (AGN), Novae, star clusters, Supernovae, stellar variability, planetary physics, solar
activity etc. ARIES has a unique role in the area of astronomical research.

Vacancy Position of Ph. D. at ARIES
ARIES select PhD candidate every year. To take admission at ARIES, candidate will have to
follow some steps taken by ARIES.
Criteria for qualification for PhD followed by Interview ARIES:
1. Minimum 55% marks in M. Sc. Physics or Astrophysics for General/OBC and 50% for SC/ST
2. JEST-2014, CSIR-NET (JRF/LS), (June 2012, December 2012, June 2013, and December 2013)
GATE - 2014 or GATE -2013 qualified In physics INSPIRE PhD fellowship.
3. Candidate should have M. Sc. on or after 2012
4. Age Criteria is not more than 28 years.
5. Students who are in appearing they should give the proof of completion and marks of
percentage of degree before / at the time of interview.
After enrollment in PhD, They will get a stipend of Rs.12000.00 per month for first two
consecutive years and after it will be upgrade to Rs.14000.00 per month.
Observatory of ARIES in Nainital
ARIES Observatory is, a place of astronomical studies, with altitude of about 1950 m, about 4.5
km from Nainital. Develop facilities for advanced astrophysical research in stellar, study of solar
& theoretical branches of astrophysics is main objective of ARIES observatory.
